LITTLE THINGS, GREAT IMPACT
Trees are great for multifarious reasons. They provide food, shelter, furniture, paper and medicine. Think for a moment. Have you ever observed how small the seeds that produce these big trees are? Usually, we overlook the great impact that little things make. Giving is one of such things.
Giving may be in form of a little effort or a short prayer offered in the cacophony of a busy schedule. It could be as trivial as a visit to the less privileged. It could be in form of money, time, skills, knowledge, ideas or advice given to those in need of it. Give what you have.
Donating a part of what we have helps to preserve the rest. This principle is evident in everything we do- science, spirituality, economics etc. For instance, Adam and Eve were instructed not to consume fruit from a certain tree, consequent upon which they would lose access to every other tree in The Garden. In insurance, payment of a premium on a house for instance, preserves the asset in case of fire or burglary. In bakery, a little yeast boosts the whole dough.
Save yourself from meltdown by giving. Giving is the road to growth. Many of us complain that we lack. Give a little of your “little”. Because of momentary insecurity, I once denied a friend who had more pressing needs than I did. “What if what I have is not enough for me?” “What if I go broke?” I thought to myself. But I soon made a u-turn when I realised my error. I have discovered that having one good finger is better than having five leprous fingers. You may not have all you need but you have enough that provokes someone’s envy. Give out of your scarcity. Your “little” gift will be an answer to someone’s prayer.
Proverbs says “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.” Deolu Akinyemi suggests that, “Life should be measured by donation, not duration.”
Money is a security, including every tangible and intangible thing you possess. You are a custodian of everything you have. Everything is given by heaven. You will best understand a gift from the perspective of the giver, understand that what you possess is not wholly yours; you are only a keeper- enjoy some and distribute some.
God keeps well those who do good to others- paying schools fees, hospital bills, clothing the naked, fighting for the oppressed, speaking for the voiceless and listening to those in obscurity. Whether or not you give, what you hoard will ultimately diminish. So, why hoard?
